Program Overview

The CSPDC established the Central Shenandoah Valley Bicycle and Pedestrian Program in 2006 and provides staff support to an active committee and four working sub-committees.  The goal of the program is to ensure that there is ongoing coordination and implementation of the Regional Bike Plan, the Regional Greenways Plan as well as other local and regional greenway, pedestrian, and trail plans.

Services We Provide

  • Administer the regional bicycle and pedestrian program, provide staff support to the committee and working groups, and ensure that the elements of annual work plan are fulfilled.
  • Work with organizations in the region whose activities or mission play a role in building support for bicycle/pedestrian programs, i.e. parks and recreational organizations, economic development and tourism departments, schools, cycling and trail organizations, etc.
  • Aggressively seek state and federal funds to further bicycle/pedestrian programs in the region.  Example: VDOT’s Safe Routes to School program, DCR’s Trails and Outdoors Fund grants, VDOT’s Enhancement Grants program, DMV’s Governors Highway Safety grants, etc.
  • Identify and develop a bicycle route network and provide maps and turn-by-turn directions for bicycle routes in the Central Shenandoah Valley Region.  To view and download these materials, please visit www.bikethevalley.org
  • Develop a bicycle tourism strategy to improve coordination and expand facilities and programs that specifically encourage bicycle tourism, i.e. identify and evaluate bicycle touring routes and create printed guide to bicycle touring.
  • Design a route signage system to help identify the Central Shenandoah regional bicycle network and address safety issues.
  • Provide support and technical assistance for local projects and programs that relate and enhance the regional bicycle/pedestrian vision.
  • Make presentations and disseminate information and materials at community events, civic group meetings and other pubic meetings regarding bicycle and pedestrian programs.
