These routes have been noted as suitable for families and beginner riders. These "off-road" routes also include a list of mountain biking routes and trails available. We hope you will find this page to be helpful in planning your ride.

Path between Mountain View Park and Grand Caverns Park Consists of a combination of sidewalks and shared use paths. Easy access, beautiful views, destinations are family friendly.

Begins at Mountain View Park (1100 20th Street)
Ends at Grand Caverns Park (5 Grand Caverns Drive)

  Montgomery Hall Park - Staunton
Biking in the park
Montgomery Hall Park is located just south of Stuart Street off Montgomery Avenue in the southwest portion of the City. Montgomery Hall Park's 148 acres include rolling hills, quiet woodlands, sports fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters, trails, and a public swimming pool.

A natural surface single-track trail system designed for mountain bikers and trail walkers/runners.  The trail system provides three different levels of difficulty to appeal to a complete spectrumof runners, walkers and cyclists from novice to expert.  Designed and developed in accordance with the IMBA guidelines for sustainable shared-use trails, it has a system of stacked loop trails with three levels of difficulty from easiest to more difficult and then leading to most difficult. 

Hillandale Park, 710 Hillandale Avenue,  Harrisonburg, Va 22801
Take Hillandale Avenue off of Va. 42 south (South High Street) in Harrisonburg. Follow Hillandale Avenue into the park.  Trailhead is on the right before circle.                 

  Buck Run Loop Trail - Highland County

Part of the trail is an old railroad bed—wide, and reasonably level.  Other parts of the trail are a little more challenging and include an uphill climb.    

From Monterey, drive west on US Route 250.  Right on Route 637 (Maple Sugar Road).   Right on Route 640 (Blue Grass Valley Road).  Left on Route 642.  Paved road becomes graveled after 1 mile; take left fork.  Follow Route 642 approximately 9 miles to Route 106.  Right on Route 106 to Locust Springs Recreation Area & Campground.

             

  Buckrun Trail/Locust Spring - Highland County

Rough trail that involves crossing back and forth over a small stream.  Relatively steep elevation downhill over first three miles, followed by a three mile climb.   

From Monterey, drive west on US Route 250.  Right on Route 637 (Maple Sugar Road).   Right on Route 640 (Blue Grass Valley Road).  Left on Route 642.  Paved road becomes graveled after 1 mile; take left fork.  Follow Route 642 approximately 9 miles to Route 106.  Right on Route 106 to Locust Springs Recreation Area & Campground.

             

  McDowell Battlefield Trail - Highland County

McDowell Battlefield Trail leads to the top of Sittlington Hill and the core of the McDowell Battlefield where a (Civil War) battle was fought on May 8, 1862.  

Parking lot located approximately 2 miles east of McDowell on south side of US Route 250.
