Rt. 11 was once part of the Warrior's Path and the Great Wagon Road before becoming a paved turnpike in the 1800s, transporting cattle, hogs, stagecoaches, and covered wagons. The highways splits 15 miles south of Staunton, increasing the ease for cyclists and journeying through the historic villages of Mint Spring, Greenville, Steeles Tavern, and Fairfield. |

The entire route is on the lightly traveled, well maintained Hwy 252 with occasional good views of the Alleghenies. It’s slightly uphill and often faces a headwind, but the ride is worth the effort. The reverse is absolutely delightful as it features long downhill sections with the wind mostly at your back. It can be combined with Route 1, The Middlebrook Loop, for a thoroughly enjoyable 28 mile round trip. |
