Starting out on Old Buena Vista Road at the intersection of Long Hollow, you will notice quite a few twists and turns as the route takes you through an older section of the Buena Vista country side. It is a fairly level ride, but once you reach Rt. 60 (29th Street) keep in mind the high traffic volume and tractor trailers.

Buffalo and Broad Creeks runs along Plank Road where you may occasionally see geese, ducks and herons in these creeks. You might spot the remains of two stone chimneys, and two abandoned stone structures that were part of the Valley Railroad Company of Virginia that was never completed.  Parts of this ride are also part of the U.S. Bike 76 Route.  It ends at the Natural Bridge, a 215 foot natural lime stone wonder, where there are restrooms, food, and drink.

This relatively flat ride (only a few hills near the beginning and just south of Vesuvius) is very enjoyable biking due to the historic markers and villages along the way.  Towards the end of the loop you will follow the South River and are almost guaranteed a blue heron sighting.  Route 11 contains more traffic, but the highway is divided and the grade is gentle.

A popular ride meandering through the countryside past the Virginia Horse Center into a magnificent mountain gorge. You’ll see mountain laurel, rhododendron, rocky cliffs and rushing whitewater. Enjoy the scenic overlook. Stop for a picnic at the pavilion. Public restrooms available. The road is curvy and well-traveled. Not suitable for young children.

Exercise caution for the first .30 mile of your trip due to the high volume of traffic on Rt. 501.  Once on River Road, enjoy a relaxing ride along the Maury River where you may catch a glimpse of a Blue Heron.  This area of the ride has a low traffic volume.  The last section of Rt. 501 is winding, hilly, and high in traffic.  Overall ride is for the experienced rider; however an easier ride may be had by taking only the River Road portion.
