Tips for Motorists....
Share the road.
Bicyclists have a legal right to ride on the road and must abide by traffic laws just like motorists. Please be courteous and give room when passing bicyclists. If a blind corner is ahead, please wait a few seconds to pass until both you and the bicyclist are around the corner. Ten seconds is not very long time when we are talking about a person’s life.
Look for bicyclists before opening your door.
Bicycles and other slow moving vehicles are required to travel near the right side of the road to allow for faster moving vehicles to pass. Naturally, bicyclists ride near the shoulder and curb of the road since they travel slower than automobiles. If you’re parallel parked and open your door to exit your car, you may be opening your door into the path of a bicyclist! So, before you exit your vehicle, please take a moment to check your side view mirror to be sure there are no bicyclists coming up from behind.
Don’t wave bicyclists through an intersection.
If you approach a 4-way stop sign with a bicyclist, do not wave the bicyclist through the intersection if it is your right-of-way. Even with the best of intentions, bicyclists can become confused when the rules of the road are not followed.
